Michael “T.O.” Crabtree, let Maybin Sign!

August 17th, 2009 | by armchair31 |

Aaron Maybin hurry up and sign.  Many of the rookies coming out of this year’s draft are starting the process, if not, have already signed on the dotted line.  The quest was to get as much money as possible before entering training camp.  Michael Crabtree is currently losing an uphill battle and has set the bar really low for malcontent wide receivers.  In the process of doing so, Crabtree is also holding the future of several other picks hostage by not signing.  Although I respect the fact that Maybin does not want to miss valuable dollars by not knowing what Crabtree’s contract is, I also think that there comes a time that you need to put your pride aside and understand that you may be risking future money by not getting into camp.

Historically those who don’t report to camp will always feel like they are playing “catch up.”  Maybin was already a work in progress when he was drafted.  Without any progress being made with his contract there can be no progress on the field which makes Aaron Maybin just “work.”  Aaron Maybin needs to understand at this point the only one he is hurting by holding out is himself.  The Bills seem primed to not make Maybin a focal point of their defence this year.  The more Maybin sits, the more he is allowing someone else to play themselves into what would have been Maybin’s spot.  Although Maybin continues to hold out, chances are he will sign soon as it is not believed he has any plans to follow Crabtree to the Unemployment Line in order to re-enter the draft next year.

Crabtree is doing something no other draft pick has ever done.  He is demanding to be paid for where he should have been picked in the draft, not where he was actually drafted.  Is this guy for real?  I am all for getting everything you can, but this is ridiculous.  Does that mean that the Raiders should be on the hook for some of Crabtree’s contract as well because they should have drafted him?  Maybe Crabtree should also ask some of the other teams to fork over some money as well, and not just the Raiders, because they shouldn’t have passed on his talents either?  Nothing about Crabtree makes any sense, even better is that he has yet to play an NFL snap.  Is he jockeying for more money because he knows he is the second coming of Jerry Rice?  Or, does he realize he has more Charles Rodgers and Troy Williamson in him so he needs to collect now?

For now Aaron Maybin is allowing himself to be taken for a ride by Michael Crabtree.  Maybin needs to pay attention and realize that waiting for progress in the Crabtree contract was a smart business move in the beginning but he is now putting his own future at risk.  Crabtree on the other hand has somehow become more T.O. than Terrell Owens himself, and he hasn’t even been introduced to the NFL yet.
