You Can Remove Fred Jackson’s Face From The Milk Carton

November 30th, 2009 | by armchair31 |

Perry Fewell is coaching like a man who has nothing to lose.  He is making decisions that many of Buffalo’s recent head coaches would have never made.  Yesterday coach Fewell did something that really should be noticed, he finally decided to field the best players who gave the Bills the best chance to win the game.  But, he did have most of America faked out to start the game.  I took a gamble and decided to start Terrell Owens and Fred Jackson in my fantasy leagues.  Even though I did say over the radio not to invest in any offensive Buffalo Bills, I also said that you can invest in them if Fred Jackson is allowed to be the starting running back again and not split carries.  I took a chance and as the game was about to begin I felt sick to my stomach as there he was once again.  Fred Jackson was ready to take the kick-off.  After the kickoff Marshawn lined up behind Ryan Fitzpatrick ready to run the ball when his number gets called.

I made the biggest gamble in fantasy sports and would look like an idiot.  I was cursing coach Fewell as being the same as former coach Dick Jauron, afraid of making the right decision out of fear of the popular decision.  But then something amazing happened, after the first play, Marshawn went to the bench and the Bills started to use Fred Jackson.  It then dawned on me.  Coach Perry Fewell has decided not to be a lame duck in his current role.  Coach Fewell allowed Jackson to return the kickoff in order to have the ball in their best play maker’s hands at that time.  Marshawn would only appear to start in order to allow Jackson to recover.  Finally someone within the Bills has acknowledged that having Jackson in the game and getting the ball would give the Bills the best chance of winning.

Owens was coming off of a record setting performance last week and I felt that he would again have a good game, provided Jackson would be the primary back on offence.  The gamble did pay off as between the two of them they hauled in 3 touchdowns.  The biggest and only knock on Jackson has been his lack of touchdowns.  But Buffalo, under the previous regime, would not allow Jackson to run when close to the goal line.  Not coach Fewell.  This coach seems to reward hard work and allowed Jackson to run when within 10 yards, and Jackson delivered.

As the game started commentator Steve Tasker said something that irritated me a little bit when he said that Fewell is being considered for the Head Coaching job.  But as the game wore on I saw a determination and passion that I have not seen in a very long time on the Bills sideline.  Fewell shocked fans when his first duty as a head coach was to name Ryan Fitzpatrick his starting QB.  He then shocked me by taking the leash off of Fred Jackson and fielding the best possible product.

As well as Buffalo played, the offensive line is still atrocious and combined with the Bills run defence are the low points on this Bills team.  But with a coach who is finally inspiring his players and allowing his play makers to make plays, it’s no wonder the team is finally responding.  For the first time this season I am no longer looking forward to who we will draft next year, rather, I am finally excited to see the product on the field.  It does not matter if Fewell is allowed to be the head coach or not after this season as he is proving that he is more than capable at succeeding at the NFL level as one.
